ČELÁKOVICE – Elbe lowlands town
Čelákovice is a town built on the left bank of the river Elbe and is located in south-eastern part of Prague-East region. The lowlands along the central part of the river Elbe with the altitude of approximately 200 metres above the sea level have been populated almost without brake since early Stone Age, which is being proved by great number of archaeological findings. Already in early middle Ages, there were Slavic settlements at the raised Elbe terrace. No later than in 12th century a small fortified wooden settlement was founded here, which also included Romanic church. Sometime around the year 1300, a stone storied settlement was built here. During the following years, this building has changed its look and finally reached Gothic-Renaissance style. Stronghold Na Hrádku is now the seat of Municipal Museum. Romanian building of the Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary underwent Renaissance modifications and Baroque alteration between the years 1708 and1712. East of the church is located building of the Deanery from the year 1782. Town hall is also of historical value. It was built in 1553, destroyed during the 30-year war, then repaired again and extended with archways after the fire in 1719. The same ground plan was used in 1911 when building a new town hall by K.Sax of Čelákovice. It is a seat of the municipal office. Those buildings are protected as cultural heritage because of their historical value.
The oldest written mention from the year 1290 speaks of Čelákovice as of a royal town. The most valuable preserved written document is “The Town Book of Čelákovice”, founded in 1366.
Very important part of livelihood of the local people used to be fishing and agriculture, since the middle of the 19th century also basket-making. This is reminded by basket exposition in the town museum in the house of painter Cenek Janda. Under the stronghold at the river Elbe was built a mill, mentioned since 14th century. During the 16th century, this mill belonged to the biggest and the most technologically advanced mills in the country.
Industrial development began only after the year 1900. In 1903, V. Červinka founded here a factory manufacturing industrial machinery, in 1906 a new factory for production of accumulators is built here by R. Stabenov /Kovohutě/, in 1910 J. Volman founded a factory for machine tool manufacturing - TOS, later on the largest in town. After the year 1922, Čelákovice became known for its river spas Grádo at the Elbe Island, destroyed by regulating the river at the end of the year 1937.
As a result of new companies being founded, character of the town changed as well. During the first decades of the 20th century, there was major increase in building of family houses and villas. In 1939, Čelákovice builder K. Bíbr realised project by J. Štursa and K. Janů and built valuable functionalistic object known as Volman´s villa.
After WWII, there was major development in estate housing. End of forties and early fifties is the birth date of major part of the estates located at the western part of the town, called V Prokopě. During the sixties, panel buildings were built here, at first on the free land in southern part of the town, later on these building projects caused that part of the old buildings downtown had to be demolished.
Year 1989 means the end of building panel houses. Some buildings in the centre of the town prepared for demolition were rebuilt in former building style. The new ground plan detached localities for building of new family houses, especially at the eastern part of the town.
There have been no major changes in industrial structure. The company TOS Čelákovice has been divided to several individual units, but production objectives remained the same. Many new companies have been founded in the town and one of the most interesting is CDC a.s. Czechoslovakia – producer of CD disks.
